Collegium recommends Justice Dheeraj Thakur’s elevation as Chief Justice of Manipur HC

Jammu: Justice Dheeraj Singh Thakur of the parent High Court of Jammu and Kashmir has been recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for elevation as Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur.

The Supreme Court Collegium late on Thursday night recommended the names of five judges for elevation as Chief Justices of the High Court.

Besides Justice Thakur’s elevation to Manipur, the Collegium recommended Justice Pritinker Diwaker to Allahabad High Court, Justice TS Sivagnanam to Calcutta High Court, Justice Ramesh Sinha to Chhattisgarh High Court and Justice Sonia G Gokani to Gujarat High Court.

Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur is the brother of former Chief Justice of India Justice TS Thakur. Thakur brothers, belonging to Ramban district, are the sons of Justice D.D. Thakur, who was Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 1984 to 1986. Earlier, Thakur was a Judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court from 1973 to 1976. Thakur has resigned as Judge in 1975 to accept Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s offer of joining his cabinet. He remained cabinet minister under Sheikh from 1975 to 1982.

Justice Thakur, whose parent High Court is the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, has been a judge of the Bombay High Court since June 10, 2022.

The Collegium’s resolution said that the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court does not have representation amongst Chief Justices of High Courts since the retirement of Justice AM Margret.

It noted that over a long period of time, no judge from Jammu and Kashmir origin has been elevated as Chief Justice of a High Court or as a judge of the Supreme Court.
