Chennai: CM Stalin to set up Flood Management Committee, asks officials to devise flood control plan

Considering the grave impact of floods in Chennai, Chief Minister MK Stalin has directed the state administrative department to prepare a permanent scheme that will remove the illegal constructions along the riverbanks and strengthen them to prevent floods in Chennai.

As the chairperson of state disaster management authority, CM Stalin in his first address has said asked the authority to set up Chennai Flood Management Committee. The committee will comprise of experts from various fields like – environment, urban planning, and disaster management. They will devise methods to control floods and should also design storm-water drains that will reduce the impact of floods.

Moreover, the district and state-level officials have been directed to act in coordination to hasten up the process. “The disasters that took place recently are not just natural. People also must take responsibility,” said CM Stalin adding that the change in seasons is not uniform, therefore, such a situation should be understood by us and we must act accordingly, reported The Times of India.

The objective of the government regarding this initiative is to prevent the loss of lives, damage to the properties and infrastructure caused by natural calamities, and also to transform the state in such a manner that it can effectively deal with all types of natural disasters in the future.
