Centre continues to closely monitor the production, import, supplies and availability of the drugs required for treatment of Mucormycosis. It has mobilised over 6 lakh 67 thousand vials of antifungal drug Amphotericin B for patients in the states, UTs and Central Health Institutes in the country so far.
Union Chemicals & Fertilisers Ministry said that it has additionally also mobilised other important drugs including Amphotericin Deoxycholate and Posaconazole, used for treatment of Mucormycosis. It said, the Department of Pharmaceuticals along with inputs from CDSCO has been continuously assessing the availability of drugs for treating Mucormycosis – both through domestic manufacturing and import.
The Ministry added that in order to augment the domestic manufacture, the Centre is continuously engaging with the manufacturers to resolve their issues related to raw materials. It informed that 6 more firms in the country have been given permission to manufacture Liposomal Amphotericin which will add to the domestic manufacturing capacity from 5 existing firms.
The Union Chemicals Ministry informed that for the current month, the total production capacity of the critical drug both from new and existing firms is expected to be around 3 lakh 76 thousand vials. It said, through Centre’s active measures to augment production of Amphotericin B Liposomal Injection, its manufacturing capacity in the country has increased over 6 times in around 60 days.
The Ministry said that through its missions all over the world, External Affairs Ministry has identified new sources of Amphotericin injections and alternative drugs for treatment of Mucormycosis. Centre has said that equitable distribution, allotments are being made to the States & UTs in accordance with the proportion of their reported case load in respect of the entire country.
