Banihal Cart Road, 1949

A motorable road connecting Srinagar with Jammu was thrown open to public in around 1922. The road, known as Banihal Card road, had existed before also, by around 1890’s, but it’s use was limited to the members of the Royal Dogra family and their guests. This picture is of 1949, a decade before the construction of Banihal tunnel or Jawahar tunnel
