August 1953. The ‘writing on the roads’ after Sheikh’s arrest

Arrest of Sheikh Abdullah, 1953. The Dispatch

Violence broke out across Kashmir in the aftermath of arrest of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on August 9, 1953. Nothing much has been recorded about the security situation after Sheikh’s arrest, but Dr Karan Singh in his exchange of letters to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru mentions about death of several civilians in clashes with the Police. In this photograph of August 1953, the law enforcing personnel are seen making protesters clean anti-government graffiti from the roads. | The Dispatch
