Amid talks of discord and UP changes, PM Modi praises Yogi Adityanath over scheme for senior citizens

Amid talks of Cabinet expansion or reshuffle in Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over a new initiative of his government for the elderly.

Tagging a news report of the ‘Elderline’ scheme – a toll-free helpline for senior citizens, PM Modi tweeted, “Very good initiative!”

The project that aims at extending healthcare and legal aids among other services to senior citizens was launched in Uttar Pradesh on May 14.

PM Modi was responding to a news report about Adityanath-led government’s scheme receiving a good response from the elderly.

Responding to PM Modi’s tweet, Adityanath said, “It’s by following your all-inclusive mantra of sabka saath, sabka vikas and sabka vishwas that the state government has been able to extend help and emotional support to the elderly.”

“On behalf of the people of the state, I heartily thank you for your wholesome praise,” the Chief Minister tweeted.

Talks of Cabinet rejig and dissent in UP

PM Modi’s praise came two days after Adityanath met him in Delhi amid talks of Cabinet expansion in Uttar Pradesh ahead of next year’s Assembly polls and also dissent in the Uttar Pradesh BJP unit over the state government’s handling of the COVID-19 situation.

The Chief Minister had also met BJP’s top brass, including party chief JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his two-day visit to Delhi.

The meeting, however, had sent a strong message to any dissenting voices about the firebrand leader’s position in the state.

“The meetings have everything to do with strategising on how to win the crucial state along with sending message to the state leadership that Yogi will remain face in upcoming Assembly elections,” a senior BJP leader was quoted as saying by ANI.

The BJP recently held a series of review meetings in Lucknow, which had fuelled speculation of a ministerial reshuffle in the state. BJP general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh was in Uttar Pradesh earlier this month to review the party’s preparations for the 2022 Assembly elections and held meetings with key ministers and party leaders to hear their concerns.
