Amid fears of COVID-19 third wave, Union Health Ministry says ‘next 100 days crucial’

Amid fears of a third wave of COVID-19, the Union Health Ministry has said that the next 100 days are crucial.

Dr VK Paul, Member-Health, Niti Aayog, said that the situation in most of the regions has turned from bad to worse.

“Overall, the world is moving towards a third wave and WHO’s warning over a third wave can’t be taken for granted; it is a red flag,” he said.

Saying that Indians needs to be responsible and must keep COVID-19 numbers in check, he said that the world is witnessing the third wave of COVID-19 cases.

Urging people to come together and ensure that the third wave doesn’t hit India, Dr Paul expressed concern over the violation of social distancing norms at several places in the country, especially hill stations, and cautioned that irresponsible behaviour could cause coronavirus numbers to rise again.

Meanwhile, the Union Health Ministry has told states and UTs to ramp up vaccination drive as the positivity rate in 47 districts of India is more than 10 per cent.

The focus has been put on containment zones, said Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry.

73 districts in the country are reporting less than 100 daily new COVID-19 cases, he added.

‘Projected decline in the use of face masks as we resume activities’

Urging Indians to mask up, the Health Ministry expressed concern over a projected decline in the use of face masks with the resumption of activities.

“Analysis shows a projected decline in the use of face masks as we resume activities. We should incorporate the use of face masks in our lives as a new normal,” said the Joint Secretary.
