Amid COVID-19 spike, auto- drivers in Jammu take positive patients to hospitals for free

Govt must announce package for transporters: Drivers

Jammu: Amid the steep surge in Covid-19 cases, a group of auto drivers in Jammu are ferrying Covid-19 along with their attendants to different hospitals on humanitarian ground.

President of auto stand near GMC Jammu, Hardev Singh said that like last year they have started taking Covid positive patients besides others to hospitals free.

Singh said that this year they started the service on April 24 and since then the process is going on. Singh said that every day, 20 autos remain outside GMC Jammu and take patients from there to Super Speciality hospital, Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh hospital Shalmaar and other hospitals.

He said despite that they themselves are going through very tough times but they are trying their best to help people in these toughest situations.

Another, auto driver Surinder Singh said that they are happily taking Covid positive patients besides others to different hospitals without thinking about themselves and their families.

“Despite going through very tough times so far we have carried hundreds of patients and haven’t taken a single penny from them,” Singh said.

Drivers said that transporters are going through very tough times but government has never bothered to take care of the community who has suffered largely in last two years.

They requested LG Manoj Sinha to look into the matter and announce a package for the transporters at an earliest so that they won’t die of starvation.
