After Vijay Rupani’s exit, who will take over as new Gujarat CM? List of frontrunners

A day after Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s sudden resignation, several names have been doing the rounds for the top post.

Rupani stepped down as Chief Minister of Gujarat on Saturday, in an unprecedented political development in the state. The decision came 15 months before the election to the 182-member Assembly that is slated to be held in December 2022.

Speculations are rife that Rupani’s successor may be from the Patidar community. A party leader said that said the final decision rests solely on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The suspense over who will replace Rupani as Gujarat CM will be over after a meeting of BJP legislators in the state later on Sunday, party sources said, PTI reported.

Here is a list of frontrunners for the key post:

Nitin Patel: He is Gujarat’s Deputy Chief Minister. He is also the minister of finance, health, medical education among others. In 2012 and 2017, he was elected to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from Mehsana.

RC Faldu: He served as the former president of the state BJP unit. He is also the Cabinet minister for agriculture, rural development and transport in state government.

Mansukh Mandaviya: He is Union Health Minister and is a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat. He belongs to the Leuva Patel community of Bhavnagar.

Purshottam Rupala: He is Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying in the second PM Modi led cabinet. He is a member of Rajya Sabha, representing Gujarat.

CR Patil: He is the president of BJP’s Gujarat uni. In the Lok Sabha, he represents Navsari. In 2019, won the election by a record margin of 689,668 votes. In 2014, he won an election with a record margin of 5,58,116 votes, the third biggest in India.
