A look at the journey of political scion Omar Abdullah

Omar Abdullah

Omar Abdullah, former J&K CM and NC leader is the scion of one of the most prominent political parties of Jammu and Kashmir – the Abdullah Family.

Omar is the son of Farooq Abdullah, a veteran politician and chairman of National Conference party. He is the grandson of Sheikh Abdullah, the self-styled Sher-e-Kashmir and the founder of National Conference party.

He became the youngest Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on 5 January 2009. Also, he was the youngest minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government in 2001.

He entered the political space in 1998, at the age of 12. He won his first Lok Sabha seat from Srinagar in 1998 parliamentary elections.

He won his second term to Lok Sabha in 1999. Thereafter, he took the oath as Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry.

He was made Union Minister of State for External Affairs in 2001, but the next year he resigned, citing the reason that he wanted to concentrate on party work.

In 2008, post the Amarnath Land Row, NC formed a coalition government with Congress. Omar, who was leading NC, was sworn in as the 11th CM of the state. He had completed his term of six years as J&K CM.

In 2006, Omar had personally met the then Pakistani President Pervez Musharaf in Islamabad.

Omar is a social media active politician and has a large fanbase on social media. He has tweeted 15.4 K times and is followed by 3.05 million people across the world.



His speech during the Lok Sabha vote of confidence, on 22 July 2008, won him praise, especially over the internet.


He has been very critical of PM Narendra Modi and BJP in his tweets, especially on the matters related to Article 370 and Article 35A. He also participated in the anti-BJP rally organised by Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata to display opposition unity.

Recently, Omar and Mehbooba Mufti engaged in a twitter conversation over a ‘fax’ machine of Governor House. Interestingly, NC and PDP were forming an alliance for the first time, to stake claims for government formation.


Not many people know, that he had a special role in Apoorva Lakhia’s film Mission Istanbul.
