2 Army officers, 5 soldiers injured in Poonch blast

SRINAGAR: Army on Monday said a Captain and a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) were killed while five others were injured in an “accidental grenade blast” along the Line of Control in Mendhar sector in Poonch district.

“Last night, an accidental grenade blast occurred in Mendhar Sector, district Poonch when troops were performing their duties along the Line of Control,” a defense ministry spokesman based in Jammu said in a statement.

“The blast resulted in injuries to soldiers who were immediately evacuated by helicopter to Command Hospital Udhampur. During the treatment, one officer and one JCO succumbed to their injuries.” While the number of injured personnel was not revealed in the statement, sources told said that five others were injured.

An army officer told GNS that a court of inquiry has been ordered into the incident. He identified the captain as Anand of KN Jha Lane, Champa Nagar Bhagalpur (Bihar) and JCO as Bhagwan Singh of Pokhar Bhitta, District- Ambedkar Nagar(UP). The injured have been identified as riflemen Sampat, Anil, Ravi, Arun and naik Pradeep. “All are undergoing treatment at Army Command Hospital Udhampur.”

Meanwhile police filed case (FIR no. 162/2022) Under Section IPC sections of 336 (Act endangering life or personal safety of others rashly or negligently)/ 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) at police station Mendhar, officials said. (GNS)
