Random security searches and identity checks on the streets of Srinagar and other towns of Kashmir Valley were a norm in early 1990s when militancy was at its peak. Such randon crackdowns, though an inconvenience for innocent citizens, helped nab militants. This pattern was again revived in the recent years, particularly in Srinagar.
