186 positive cases, 2 deaths reported in Ladakh in last seven days

LADAKH: The Union Territory of Ladakh in the last seven days has reported new 186 positive cases and two Covid-19 deaths, forcing authorities to reissue containment measures to curb the spread.

The Covid-19 situation in Ladakh started to worsen after the region in late December started to register cases in twin districts –Leh and Kargil.

The region reported a total of 186 cases in the last seven days, which include166 in Leh and 20 in Kargil besides two deaths in Leh district, taking the toll of active cases to 269 in the region. Ladakh, comprising two districts, including Leh and Kargil, is witnessing a sharp rise in the COVID cases with Leh most affected.

According to the figures, the twin districts of Ladakh registered a total of only 186 COVID-19 positive cases, of which 166 cases were reported in the Leh alone and only 20 in Kargil in the first week of the ensuing year with two deaths due to the virus in the region.

The figures reveal the region has reported a total of 22,370 cases so far of which 3763 were reported in Kargil and 18,607 in Leh district alone while the total active cases have come down to 269 which comprise 232 in Leh and 37 in Kargil district.

The positivity rate in the region has witnessed a sharp spike and went up to 1.2 percent on January 06 while the district-wise break up is 0.98 percent in Kargil and 1.25 per cent in Leh, reveal the figures.

Figures reveal that the recovery rate in the region has jumped to  97.8  percent with a 97.9 percent recovery rate in Leh where a total of 18,212 patients have recovered while 3668 patients have recovered in Kargil taking the rate to 97.5 percent in the district.

About the death rate in the region, figures reveal that a total of 221 COVID-19 positive patients have died due to the virus in Ladakh of which 163 are from Leh alone taking the overall fatality rate in the district to 0.88 percent  and 1.5 percent in the Kargil district where 58 patients have died so far with regions overall percentage maintained at 0.99 percent.

The figures reveal that the total positivity rate in the Union Territory of Ladakh has gone up to 3.7 percent and the twin districts comprising Leh and Kargil with 5.0 percent and 1.6 percent of positivity rate.

The figures also reveal that a total of 608128 tests have been done in the region so far. Notably, the authorities in the union territory of Ladakh have enhanced containment measures to stop the further spread of the virus in the region with different measures including not allowing the gatherings that would lead to transmission.

Besides, they did not allow tuition centers to open saying that it will be decided once the target of vaccinated children is achieved to a satisfactory level.

It may be recalled that the region reported a variant of Omicorn as well at the end of the last year. Further, the figures reveal that after a record 100 percent vaccination of 1st dose the region is nearing completion to achieve the target of 100 percent in 2nd dose as well with the overall percentage at 95. 38 percent as of 06 January—(KNO)
